In this user-friendly project plan, you can build a custom, lofted twin bed with lots of storage using the IKEA MALM 6-drawer dresser. Whether it's a kid's room or a dorm room, this bed is the perfect space-saving option (details are provided for how to make this build so that it can be disassembled and mobile for dorm rooms).
Lofted beds similar to this cost $2,000-$3,000 at Pottery Barn... but if you're like me, you'd rather have the pride of doing it yourself and save up to $2,500. This build can come in under $600, including the dresser! *Lumber prices vary by location.
Prior knowledge of very basic woodworking is all that is needed to complete this build (making a few mitered cuts is the most complex technique used).
Because of IKEA's wavering inventory, if you find that the white MALM 6-drawer dresser isn't available, another color in the same size can be used. MALM is top-coated with acrylic paint, making it easy to paint over. Painting details are provided in this PDF guide.
Bed dimensions: ~77" x 39 1/4", not including railing and ladder
